Statement from the Mater Hospital on MLSA planned industrial action

Significant disruption and delays to services are expected in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital today as a result of the planned industrial action by the Medical Laboratory Scientists Association (MLSA).

The industrial action is expected to take place from 8am to 8pm today.  The Mater Hospital has been contacting patients whose planned inpatient or day-case elective procedures are going to be affected.  However, dialysis and cancer services are expected to continue.

The Mater advises patients to turn up to their appointments as scheduled, unless they have been contacted by the hospital directly to cancel their appointments.

The medical scientists have worked closely with management to ensure that urgent services can be delivered safely during the industrial action.  The Emergency Department in the Mater will be open as normal and will prioritise the treatment of the sickest and most urgent patients.

However, we do expect that there will be an impact on the ED and patients with non-urgent care needs may experience delays.  Therefore, we would urge such patients to seek other treatment options such as their GP, if appropriate to their care needs.

All appointments and procedures disrupted will be rescheduled as soon as possible.  We apologise for any inconvenience the strike causes our patients.
