Taoiseach Supports Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation’s Funding Announcement for 2,600 Home Help Hours for Palliative Patients
Taoiseach Micheál Martin today launched Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation’s Strategy 2022 – 2026 at The Merrion Hotel. At the launch, it was announced that Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation will fund 2,600 home help hours for Palliative Patients in both Mayo and Roscommon this year.
The 2022 – 2026 strategy theme is ‘Together We Can Do So Much’. It builds on what’s been achieved over the last five years. During this time, Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation has built, fitted out and opened two state-of-the-art Hospice facilities in Mayo and Roscommon. The new strategy reaffirms the commitment to fund both of these facilities. This is while continuing to provide vital palliative care services to the people of Mayo and Roscommon.
Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation has been in existence since 1993. It exists to provide palliative care services to people with life limiting illnesses and their families. This is in County Mayo and County Roscommon. Over the past 29 years, the Palliative Care Teams have assisted in the care of over 18,000 patients and their families, providing a seven day service.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin said:
“I wish to commend Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation on the success of the last five years. This is in terms of fundraising over €15 million and building two hospices in Mayo and Roscommon.
This was achieved thanks to the strong support of communities in the region. This is as well as everyone involved at the Foundation in driving forward its vision for palliative care services.
The 2022-2026 strategy sets out a clear path to expand the high quality care already available to patients with life-limiting conditions, as well as their families.
I want to thank the palliative care teams in Mayo and Roscommon providing these essential services to their communities. Therefore, the 2,600 home help hours will be very much welcomed by families who require additional support in the home.”
In November 2021, Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD officially launched the new Roscommon Palliative Care Unit. He was also present at today’s launch.
“I had the privilege to have been invited to see and open the fantastic Roscommon Hospice in November last year. The pride I witnessed in that community has stuck with me. The title of the 2022-2026 Strategy, ‘Together We Can Do So Much’ speaks to that pride and ambition.
We know that high quality, multi-disciplinary palliative care makes a huge difference in the lives of patients and their families. I commend the work of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation as well as the whole Hospice network countrywide on their ambition and vision for palliative care services in Ireland.”
CEO Mayo Roscommon Hospice, Martina Jennings, said:
“I’m delighted to announce today that 2,600 home help hours will be funded through the Foundation this year. This will give families that much required additional support in the home. It’s a gift of time to the families in our care and will make a huge difference to their lives. This will be done in partnership with the HSE, and through our Palliative Homecare Teams.
We have very ambitious plans for the next five years. We’re very much looking forward to getting them underway. We’ll collaborate with the HSE in terms of further developing palliative care services in our region. This is with our network of fellow hospices nationally. We will represent the voice of patients as well as their families by engaging in national policy formation.”
Chair of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation, Mike Smith said:
“I’m thrilled that An Taoiseach, Minister Donnelly and our local TD’s are here today to launch our new five year strategy. We’re immensely proud of what has been achieved in the last five years and that’s down to the wonderful community of fundraisers we have behind us. Without them, Mayo and Roscommon Hospices would not exist, therefore these services would not be available to the people of Mayo and Roscommon. We are committed to continuing to fund palliative care services in our communities and developing these services further.”
Chair of Strategy Committee Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation, Joanne Grehan, said:
“Together We Can Do So Much is built on the foundations of what we have already achieved over the last five years and what we plan to deliver over the next five. The continuous dedication, generosity, respect and love shown by our Palliative Care Teams, and especially over this past period, has been remarkable and we are now focused on expanding the range and reach of our services for the benefit of our communities all across Mayo and Roscommon – and vitally, on ensuring their implementation. Therefore, what is important to our patients and their families is important to us and this Strategy is based on their needs.”
