Roscommon Injury Unit is here for you this Christmas

With winter upon us and Christmas just around the corner, Roscommon University Hospital is reminding people that its Injury Unit is open from 8am to 8pm, 365 days per year to treat a range of injuries which are non-life or non-limb threatening as an alternative to visiting a busy Emergency Department. The Injury Unit is located within the Urgent Care Centre at Roscommon University Hospital and is staffed by Doctors, Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Nurses.

Maggie Mew, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Roscommon Injury Unit explains, “We are able to see, diagnose and treat a wide range of injuries for both adults and children over five years of age. You do not need a GP referral, we have a walk-in-service and we have Covid measures in place for people presenting to the unit.  Our team is experienced in treating people quickly and efficiently; the average turnaround time for seeing and treating patients at Roscommon Injury Unit is less than 60 minutes.

“We treat defined groups of people with injuries from shoulder to finger and from knee to toe effectively. We essentially deal with non-life or non-limb threatening injuries and also treat scalds, wound type injuries, minor burns, traumatic wounds, remove foreign bodies from the eye, ear and nose.

“The Injury Unit also deals with eye injuries, along with sports injuries such as hand injuries, ankle injuries and fractures.

“The Emergency Departments can be extremely busy at this time of year and it is important to remember that Emergency Departments are for emergencies only.  By visiting the Injury Unit you will get the care and treatment you need in the most appropriate place and you will be referred to specialist care if necessary.

“If you are looking for advice on your injury and want to know if you should attend the Roscommon Injury Unit, you can call us on 090 663 2212.

“We hope everyone has a safe, healthy and happy Christmas and remember we are here if you need us.”

Roscommon Injury Unit serves patients in the vicinity of Roscommon, East Galway, Westmeath, South East Mayo, Longford, South Leitrim and South Sligo.
