Beacon Hospital Launches Ireland’s Largest Private Rheumatology Centre to Meet Rising Demand
Beacon Hospital has announced the opening of its new Rheumatology Centre, representing the largest and most comprehensive private rheumatology service of its kind in Ireland.
The purpose-built centre is designed to deliver specialist, patient-centred care for individuals living with autoimmune, inflammatory, degenerative and musculoskeletal conditions, bringing together advanced diagnostics, infusion therapies and multidisciplinary clinical expertise within a single setting.
The launch comes at a time of increasing demand for rheumatology services in Ireland. It is estimated that approximately one million people are living with some form of arthritis, including around 600,000 with osteoarthritis and 125,000 with inflammatory arthritis. In addition, approximately 300,000 people have osteoporosis, highlighting the growing burden of musculoskeletal disease across the healthcare system.
Led by a team of seven Consultant Rheumatologists, the centre is supported by specialist nursing and allied health professionals, offering integrated pathways for both diagnosis and long-term disease management. The service includes routine access to musculoskeletal ultrasound for diagnostic assessment, alongside ultrasound-guided injections to support targeted treatment.
The centre has been designed to streamline access and reduce fragmentation of care, with rapid-access pathways for conditions such as inflammatory arthritis, giant cell arteritis and bone health assessment.
Patients attending the service will have access to a comprehensive range of facilities, including advanced diagnostic imaging such as ultrasound, X-ray, MRI, CT and DEXA scanning, as well as a dedicated five-chair infusion suite for the delivery of specialist therapies. The centre also benefits from on-site INAB-accredited immunology and laboratory services, alongside physiotherapy, rehabilitation and pain management support.
Close collaboration across specialties, including orthopaedics, dermatology, nephrology, pulmonology and cardiology, supports a multidisciplinary approach to managing complex rheumatologic disease. Conditions managed within the centre include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, vasculitis, osteoporosis and gout.
Commenting on the launch, Prof David Kane, Consultant Rheumatologist, said:
“Rheumatology is increasingly complex, requiring input from multiple specialties alongside advanced diagnostics and therapies. Having that level of expertise and infrastructure available within a single centre means we can make faster, more informed clinical decisions and provide a more seamless experience for patients.”
Michael Cullen, CEO of Beacon Hospital, added:
“The opening of our new Rheumatology Centre reflects a significant investment in specialist care at a time when demand for timely diagnosis and treatment continues to grow. By bringing together expertise, diagnostics and therapies in one location, we are focused on improving access, reducing delays and supporting better long-term outcomes for patients.”
The Rheumatology Centre forms part of Beacon Hospital’s broader €75 million capital investment programme, which includes the addition of 70 inpatient beds and a new Emergency Department. The hospital has also recently invested €30 million in the development of the Beacon Brain Institute and the Beacon Breast Centre, further expanding specialist services across the campus.
