We Will Tell Everyone: A Joyous Celebration of Life with Dementia

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (The ASI) is thrilled to announce the release of The Memory Lane Heroes with Carl Corcoran and The Irish World Academy’s Nasc Choir’s, “We Will Tell Everyone”.  The song is a research collaboration between members of the Dementia Research Advisory Team (DRAT) at The ASI and the Music Therapy Department at The Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, UL (University of Limerick).

The song – written collaboratively with support from songwriter Carl Corcoran – explores the experiences of living with dementia and the importance of Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) in dementia research.

The Memory Lane Heroes is comprised of DRAT Members Helen Rochford -Brennan, Kevin Quaid and Gerry Paley – who live with dementia – Carmel Geoghegan, Helena Quaid, and Nuala Paley – who care for people living with dementia. The group collaborated with music therapist Dr Lisa Kelly from UL on her PhD research which explored the role of music therapy for people with dementia and their carers.

During the research process, the PPI contributors shared much of their own personal and experiential knowledge.

Helen Rochford-Brennan said: “To be able to tell the world that you can still dance, you can drive, you can go on enjoying your life … it’s powerful”.

Kevin Quaid said: “I just realised today that there’s nothing we can’t do’.

Gerry Paley said: “It really, really is very deep, very empowering, and a very strong, sincere message to others.”

The research was supervised by Prof. Hilary Moss, Course Director of the MA Music Therapy and Prof. Ita Richardson from Lero – The Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software.

Prof. Helen Phelan, Irish World Academy Director, stated: “We are so proud to support the production of this inspirational song…. an excellent example of how music and the arts can be harnessed to create research with people rather than on them.”

“We Will Tell Everyone” will be released on 1st August 2024 and will be available on digital platforms.
